Which places in Colombia do we recommend to visit?

Colombia is a country full of diversity, offering something for every type of traveler. Here are some of our personal favorite spots to explore: Santa Marta, Cartagena, Palomino, el Eje Cafetero, Medellín y la Selva Amazónica. This page offers some great recommendations, but don’t hesitate to reach out to us—we’d love to share more tips and ideas!

What is the weather in July?

Colombia has no seasons due to its location close to the Equator, so temperatures throughout the year are generally the same.

In Bogota, average minimum temperatures range from 7 °C to 10 °C (45 °F to 50 °F), while daytime highs usually range from 14 °C to 19 °C (57 °F to 66 °F). Although July is normally dry season, we cannot really predict the weather in Bogota (sunrise in winter, midday is summer and nightfall in autumn).

We recommend to be prepared in any case for rain. The temperature in Villa de Leyva is 25°C during the day, 13°C at night. We recommend guests bring a jacket or sweater for the evening. The town has cobblestone streets, it is very important to bring comfortable walking shoes.

IS IT SAFE TO TRAVEL TO COLOMBIA?

Yes! Colombia is a wonderful and safe destination with just a few things to keep in mind for a smooth and stress-free trip. Here are some pro tips from the Danis to help you enjoy your visit with peace of mind:

-Leave valuables in the hotel safe: It’s always best to keep your important belongings locked up while you’re out exploring.

-Keep your purse and wallet in sight: Restaurants often have hooks under tables, so use them to keep your things close.

-Use official transportation: Avoid hailing taxis off the street. Instead, request one at the airport, your hotel, or use apps like Cabify or Uber.

-Be mindful of your surroundings: Avoid walking on empty streets or using your phone while walking around.

-Book tours in advance: To avoid last-minute hassle, consider booking your tours ahead of time or through your hotel.

-Skip public buses and Transmilenio during rush hour: These can get very crowded, so it’s best to avoid them during peak times.

-Agree on prices in advance: In markets, prices are often negotiable, so ask about prices before making a purchase to avoid surprises.

-Credit cards are widely accepted: Just be sure to check your bill and cover your PIN when using your card.

-Withdraw money at shopping malls: It’s safer to take out cash at ATMs in malls rather than on the streets.

With these tips, you’re all set for a safe and enjoyable trip to Colombia!

Should I Have Cash?

Yes, but not in large amounts. It’s always handy to have cash for things like cabs, tolls, or shopping at artisan markets. Here are a few more tips to keep in mind:

-Check if shops accept cards: Some places, especially small shops or restaurants, may not take card payments, so it’s a good idea to ask beforehand.

-Currency: The official currency in Colombia is the Colombian Peso (COP).

-Exchanging money: You can exchange dollars or euros for Colombian pesos at the airport (usually near baggage claim) or withdraw cash directly from an ATM.

Telephony & Travel Apps:

-SIM cards: If your phone plan doesn’t include international service, it’s cheaper to buy a prepaid SIM card for data. You can get one at the airport or from kiosks around the city.

-Rappi: Need something delivered? Rappi is Colombia’s version of Uber Eats or Glovo—download the app to have literally anything delivered straight to your door!

Having some cash on hand will make your trip smoother, but with these tips, you’ll be well-prepared to handle both digital and physical payments!
